Greetings, grappling fans! Wanted to fill you in on Stevie’s experience at Grappling X tournament in San Diego, CA on April 15, 2023. This six-year-old boy is a grey belt training out of the Art of Jiujitsu academy in Costa Mesa, CA. Competed for the first time at a Grappling X event, and this is how it went!

Stevie put in the work leading up to the tournament, training in both jiujitsu classes at AOJ and wrestling classes at Savage House wrestling club. At 51lbs with a Gi on, he was competing in the 50-60lbs bracket, but he was up for the challenge.

In the Gi portion of the tournament, Stevie shone, scoring two submissions – a kimura from mount and a rear naked choke. But he wasn’t done yet! In the NoGi portion of the tournament, he scored two more submissions, including a ‘Head & Arm throw’ (that he practiced all week at wrestling) and a ‘spinning arm-bar’ that he drilled at AOJ.

Overall, it was a great experience for Stevie at his first Grappling X tournament. The tournament was well-organized, and his brackets went by quickly, giving him plenty of time to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the thrill of competing.

This young grappler has got a bright future ahead of him, and we can’t wait to see what he’ll do next. Keep rolling, Stevie!
